What is LEAP-RE ?

The Long-Term Joint EU-AU Research and Innovation Partnership on Renewable Energy (LEAP-RE) is a Horizon 2020 funded initiative co-financed by the European Union to foster durable cooperation between the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) in the field of renewable energy. Running from 2020 to 2025, LEAP-RE mobilises a broad network of international stakeholders to support sustainable energy research, innovation, and capacity building across Africa and Europe. The project directly contributes to global commitments such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 – ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all – and reinforces priorities under the EU Green Deal and AU Agenda 2063.

LEAP-RE brings together an extensive consortium of research institutions, governmental bodies, private sector actors, and civil society organisations from both continents. This collaborative engagement addresses key renewable energy challenges while aligning multilateral frameworks and enabling joint activities that accelerate sustainable energy transitions.
