From research to impact: building the future of Africa‑Europe energy cooperation.

What we're dedicated about

LEAP Energy is more than a research initiative, it's a living ecosystem for AU-EU collaboration in sustainable renewable energy. Built on a proven network of 300+ organisations funded since 2020 through LEAP-RE and LEAP-SE Cofund, it transforms scientific innovation into real-world impact: connecting breakthroughs to industry, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and communities across Africa and Europe.

Long-lasting, institutionally anchored, and designed with inclusivity and equity at its core, LEAP Energy is where shared ambition becomes shared progress.

LEAP Energy aims to empower local research capacities and foster innovative solutions tailored to diverse regional needs. By promoting EU-AU cooperation, the programme seeks to:

  • Strengthen research and innovation ecosystems across Africa and Europe.
  • Support collaborative research, innovation projects, and capacity-building activities.
  • Foster conditions for sustainable and inclusive energy transitions by leveraging shared knowledge and methodological frameworks.
  • Build a foundation for a long-term bi-regional partnership beyond the lifespan of the project.

7 thematic priorities

1.

Evaluation of joint research and innovation actions for renewable energy systems.

2.

End-of-life and second-life management of renewable energy components.

3.

Smart stand-alone systems to improve access to energy.

4.

Smart grid solutions capable of integrating diverse renewable systems for communities.

5.

Technologies and processes that enhance productive uses of energy, especially for agriculture and local value chains.

6.

Innovative solutions for key domestic uses, such as clean cooking and cold chain systems.
